Ultrametricity

A Self-Contained Theory of p-Adic Physics, Quantum Computation, and Spacetime — Developed from the Primitive Act of Distinction

GitHub Pages License: CC BY 4.0 DOI

Overview

This repository contains a complete, self-contained development of ultrametric physics — a unified framework grounded in the geometry of nested distinctions. Starting from Spencer-Brown's primitive act of "drawing a distinction," it constructs p-adic geometry, Bruhat-Tits trees, and the adelic unification of all completions of the rational numbers. It covers quantum computation, quantum gravity, the Standard Model, and measurement theory, and culminates in concrete computational architectures and 18 falsifiable experimental protocols.

Requires no prior mathematical knowledge. Chapter 1 begins with the act of drawing a distinction. By the end, you will understand how to build an intrinsically fault-tolerant quantum computer — and why it must be so.

The Primitive Act

"Draw a distinction." — George Spencer-Brown, Laws of Form (1969)

The act of drawing a distinction is the most fundamental operation possible. Before you can have a set, you must distinguish its elements. Before you can count, you must distinguish quantities. Before you can measure, you must distinguish endpoints. This work begins where thought itself begins: with the act of distinction.

Nested distinctions form trees. Trees are ultrametric spaces. Ultrametric spaces satisfy the strong triangle inequality $d(x,z) \leq \max{d(x,y), d(y,z)}$ — the algebraic signature of hierarchical nesting. In such spaces, errors cannot accumulate, spacetime is naturally discrete, and UV divergences are geometrically regulated. This is the geometry of the physical world.

Key Results

  • Geometric fault tolerance: Errors cannot accumulate in ultrametric spaces — the strong triangle inequality bounds total error by the maximum single perturbation. Passive protection from distinction nesting replaces active error correction.
  • Adelic unification: All completions of ℚ unified in the adele ring — the space of all distinctions at all primes simultaneously. The product formula enforces information conservation across all distinction frameworks.
  • Natural UV finiteness: Tree depth provides a geometric cutoff — the distinction hierarchy is finite, terminating at the Planck scale. No renormalization needed.
  • Hierarchy problem resolution: The EW-Planck disparity is a combinatorial consequence of distinction depth — $10^{34} \sim q^{d}$ for reasonable $q$, $d$.
  • Measurement as Monna projection: The apparent randomness of quantum mechanics arises from the lossy projection of p-adic distinction states onto Archimedean coordinates — not from fundamental indeterminacy.
  • 18 falsifiable predictions: CMB log-periodic oscillations (the smoking gun of nested distinctions), muon g-2 correction, W-mass shift, lepton universality pattern, dark matter cross-sections, and more.
