Our Data Science Community of Practice Team

Current Team

Andrew Taylor, Mentor and CoP co-lead

  • Bio: Andrew Taylor is a Los Angeles–based AI researcher and engineer, now completing an M.S. in Artificial Intelligence at Johns Hopkins University’s Whiting School of Engineering. He co-leads the Data Science team at Hack for LA, building innovative, responsible systems for civic impact. His research has spanned the gamut of AI topics, from fairness and bias mitigation, to robust representation learning, and practical retrieval-augmented generation, to mention a few. His recent work explores information-theoretic machine learning unification. He has applied his research to real-world problems, from fraud detection to computer vision emphasizing measurable outcomes and reliable deployment. Andrew is also the founder of Artificial Arts, an AI-film studio whose projects won Best Movie and Best Animation at the AI International Film Festival. Before engineering, Andrew worked as a financial advisor at Wells Fargo and UBS. He holds B.A. degrees in Philosophy and Chinese from the University of Arizona.

Bonnie Wolfe, CoP co-lead

  • Bio: Bonnie bridges the gap between data science, product strategy, and civic impact. She has led the design of scalable data structures, streamlined analytics workflows, and championed governance practices that make Hack for LA’s shared data both reliable and actionable. With experience spanning product management, research operations, and cross-project collaboration, Bonnie focuses on projects that drive better products and stronger community outcomes.

Sophia Alice, Mentor and Cop Co-Lead

  • Bio: Sophia Alice is a data scientist with a mathematics degree from the University of Chicago. She has worked in education, real estate, and research. Currently working for CoreLogic as an Automation Engineer, she is also very active in the volunteer community, as a volunteer with Hack for LA, co-leading the Data Science Community of Practice, and on the leadership team for Out In Tech.

Karina Lopez, Mentor and Cop Co-Lead

  • Bio: Karina Lopez is a data scientist with a BA from Dartmouth College in neuroscience with a focus on computational modeling. Keeping inclusivity and activism at the forefront, she loves to incorporate research and analyses into direct impact decision-making. She has worked in both academia and industry, currently specializing in subscription and content analytics. As a data lover, she always maintains a mindset of "How can we make this data product as inclusive as possible?" at every step of the research process.
