API to disable update-search-index during bulk inserts?

I'm creating a bulk importer and I can trigger a manual reindex after it has completed. Is it possible somehow to flag it so that anything inserted/updated during the bulk import won't have update-search-index jobs triggered, and then trigger them all afterwards?

Yes I have seen this but I'm looking for a dynamic way ideally to modify this setting so that it does individual ones normally but I can trigger the buffer updates when I do a big import.
