Use European platform instead of GitHub

Since this is an open, european development, it would be nice to also be hosted on an open, european platform.

Most fitting would probably be code.europa.eu, if that is possible.

Another possibility would be opencode.de, which is Germany's open code platform.

Both are gitlab instances in public hand and therefore open source and under purely european control.

There might be other alternatives I don't know about of course.

I believe using an open-source alternative to GitHub is fine, but I don’t think geography should be a factor in open-source projects. IMHO, considering practical factors like compliance, reliability, or privacy would make the argument stronger.

I totally agree, we want to stop depending of Google, but not of Microsoft. It doesn't make sense.
On the other hand (I hope I'm not mistaken), Docs is initiative of France and Germany. It's incredible, at this point, to see individual initiatives instead of join all EU countries.

If this will be moved somewhere, it should stay in github as a read-only mirror, so it can compete in the stars chart. 11k stars is pretty amazing, I guess it will be one of the top projects in collaborative document editing categories. It can bring new people to the project.

@stardust85 not sure about codeberg, but gitlab has a mirror feature that can be set up to automatically push changes to another remote, in this case GitHub.

Codeberg is running Forgejo, which offers some mirror functionality (both pulling and pushing, the docs have examples for both):

Depends on what was bad before, as I'm not sure what to compare "nowadays" to. I'm basically a gitlab Fanboy though, I loved what they did from the beginning of me using open source. It basically just started because they had free private repos that GitHub didn't have back then, and cemented when I realised how complicated GitHub action are in that they are an abstraction level above gitlab by default basically, which makes it harder to learn when used to gitlab's default way of "use this docker image, run this script" kind of pipeline definition.
Navigation was also always better for me in gitlab, although their latest nav overhaul went horribly wrong in my opinion. Still better then GitHub's though.

I use GitHub because most open source repos are here, but I always prefer gitlab.

Take everything with a grain of salt, as I said I'm basically a gitlab Fanboy.

Haha, don't get me wrong, I use gitlab on a daily basis. But I mean it used to be a Dutch company but nowadays they seem to be an US based company?

Yes the company is american, which is why their own SaaS, gitlab.com, should not be that high on the ladder here. However code.europa.eu and opencode.de are run by EU and Germany and therefore do not fall under Patriot/CLOUD act.

code.europa.eu is probably complicated to get into.
opencode.de is I tihnk easier to get started, but german so I guess I'd first look for a french alternative. I kinda expect France to already have an official git hoster, but that's just prejudice because there are many french open osurce things I saw, many in connection with Framasoft.
Not sure if https://code.gouv.fr would be the "correct" site to use here, maybe someone french can find out if that is actually a git hoster and I'm just too german to find the link to the actual git hoster instance (not sure if it's gitlab too or something else)?

https://code.gouv.fr is not a code forge, it's the website of the French OSPO.

We used to publish the list of FR public repositories at https://code.gouv.fr/sources (which now redirects to the latest data), but we have stopped doing so. On all 30K repos identified, ~50% are hosted on GitHub, the rest is on ~90 GitLab CE forges, mostly deployed by/for research institutions.

DINUM does not offer an interministerial code hosting platform yet like opencode.de does.

Have an alternative to another platform is good, but to force worldwide dev to work with another platform seems the best way to get less contribution and view, especially for a 16k stars project, idk.

They could always keep this repo as a mirror of wherever development happens (gitlab does push mirroring) for discoverability. Actually working on another platform cannot be a legit reason with git being decentralised by design.

Why not framagit by Framasoft? It's a gitlab instance by a well known French association/Non profit. They are the ones who made peertube for example. You can directly log onto there with your github account even.
