RTX 3070ti Laptop stuck in P0 (~65W) until switching G-Helper mode

What's wrong?

Laptop: ASUS ROG Flow X16 GV601RW
GPU: RTX 3070 Laptop
Driver: 591.86
G-Helper: 0.241

Symptoms:

• GPU stuck in P0 (~65W)
• fans ramp to ~6300 RPM
• nvidia-smi shows no processes

Workaround:
Switching Silent ↔ Balanced resets GPU state.

Final fix:
Clean reinstall of NVIDIA driver.

Note changing from balanced mode to silent mode temporarily kicked the fans down to a quiet profile but then it came back. Once I fixed nvidia issue went away.

How to reproduce the bug?

Not sure, reporting this for tracking/awareness in case others encounter similar issues. I know its more of a nvidia issue.

@jcroy hello,

G-Helper is not managing GPU power directly, and all default modes are just baked into firmware. App only switches between them.

If you use any customizations inside modes - I would suggest to reset all of them to Factory Defaults

@jcroy P.S. Do I understand correctly that clean reinstall of Nvidia driver actually helped you ? Cause if not - you can also try EC-reset, it can help in case there is some firmware hiccup

Yeah fans and power usage seem better after driver update. Previously I was running on a driver from Jan 2026. Fans were ramped up even though cpu and memory usage was low. It was irritating me couldn't figure out if vscode was hogging resources or if something was running in the background. I just repasted the cpu,gpu and vrams chips as well so thermally it should be decent.

All good now but figured I'd share here even though it appears to be more of a nvidia issue than a ghelper in case someone comes here and opens an issue about it.

Then it looks like some driver hiccup indeed.

As for the fan behavior, it's always handled by firmware. I'm not sure if driver can affect it somehow in a first place (unless it's somehow messed up a GPU temp reporting, so firmware was running fans on max speed due to incorrect or absent GPU temp)
