Review/update test setup

We added tests for modules at an Unhosted Unconf 1.5 years ago or so, but nobody actually used them much or wrote new once since then. We should make sure everything's prepared to easily and properly test modules, both local and in CI (as well as then try to cover the existing code with tests as far as possible, of course).
