Redis CLI accessible, but not Redis Server, on Ubuntu 25.04

Issue:
Upon installing redis via the snap store or sudo snap install redis, the redis.cli is perfectly accessible, however, redis.server command throws a Command not found error.

Thank you for finding time to report the issue.

redis.server isn’t missing - it's defined in the snap as a daemon service, not a user-facing command. Because of the daemon: simple flag in the server app, snapd exposes it as a service (redis.server in snap services) instead of putting a redis.server shim in /snap/bin.

You can manage it as a snap service with:

sudo snap start  redis.server
sudo snap stop   redis.server
sudo snap status redis.server

The Redis configuration file can be edited on the host at:

/var/snap/redis/common/etc/redis/redis.conf

If you want to run redis-server directly (for example, without the embedded --loadmodule arguments), use the binary path as follows:

/snap/redis/current/usr/bin/redis-server

I am unfamiliar with the intricacies of snaps, hence I tried the commands you listed, i.e., sudo snap start redis.server sudo snap status redis.server

Both of them throw an error.

However, doing a sudo snap run redis.server works as expected.

I also noticed that the snapcraft page for redis is not updated with detailed instructions on how exactly to setup and run redis after installing it. Screenshot attached for reference.

Do you think it would be a good idea to incorporate the post-install instructions you mentioned in your message, to the snap store page?

I think it would help a lot for people like me, who get confused on why some commands work and some don't.

You’re right about the confusion earlier - I mixed up systemd-style commands with snap’s own service management.

You can also do

sudo snap run --shell redis.server

To get into shell where redis-server command is available.

That’s a great suggestion - I’ll keep this issue open to track improving the Snap Store docs with clearer setup and usage instructions.
