DIO on IO expander such as mcp23008

Did anybody try to modify HAL library so it works with IO expander.
I'm not sure, if it's only me, but if you use I2C, UART and SPI with 2 DIO for lorawan with ESP8266, it is really complicated to have a safe operation - taking into account that some PINs on ESP8266 has limited usage.

Any ideas? I did some HAL modifications, but it never worked for me :(
