Add a Custom Search Tool

I would like to add a custom data search tool that queries SQL databases and appears alongside the existing web search tools (like Exa) in the Open Canvas UI. This would allow users to search through their own structured data stored in SQL databases directly within the chat interface. The results should be displayed exclusively from the SQL database in the same UI section as other search tools. what are the recommended steps to implement this? Should I use MCP or integrate directly into Open Canvas?
