Getting error even after calling initializeApp

I am not sure if this is a bug or if I am doing something wrong but I am simply calling the initializing function on the root level but getting this error
Error: No Firebase App '[DEFAULT]' has been created - call firebase.initializeApp()

I am using version 17.5.0(upgraded from 14.x.x) and i recently moved on to react-native 0.71.8 from 0.67.1
